Oxfam, Wolrec rally support for Mzimba female candidates

Oxfam in Malawi and Women’s Legal Resource Centre (Wolrec) have intensified awareness campaigns in Mzimba District to encourage people to vote for female candidates, youths and people with disabilities.

Speaking on Wednesday at Kathibi Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kampingo Sibande, Worlec project coordinator Juliet Simbeye said they want people to vote for women, youths and people with disabilities.

“We encourage voters to elect capable women, youths and people with disabilities to ensure that we balance gender and age in decision-making positions,” she said.

Simbeye also urged political parties, candidates and supporters to maintain peace during the campaign period.

Anastasia Kajumba, who attended the awareness rally, said she will vote for female candidates.

“In 2019, we elected a female parliamentarian in Mzimba East Constituency, Wezzie Gondwe, who died in 2021. Things during her time were working,” she said.

Meanwhile, independent parliamentary aspirant Mines Ng’oma said she wants to initiate projects that will uplift people’s lives.

“We need to teach our farmers to improve on production,” she said.

Another female shadow parliamentarian is Olipa Muyaba of UTM Party.

The European Union supported the exercise.
